In Matthew 8 Jesus has just finished the Sermon on the Mount and is travelling to various places around the Sea of Galilee healing and teaching many. Though Matthew is written to a Jewish audience, throughout chapter 8 Jesus heals people that Jews typically avoided. He touches a leper to heal him. Peter’s mother-in-law is sick and he heals her – a woman. In our particular story, Jesus heals a centurion’s servant – a Gentile.
