In our last lesson we examined Jesus’ parable concerning a Pharisee and a tax collector. The surprise of the story was that the tax collector was justified and belonged to the kingdom of God while the Pharisee, the religious, moral person was not justified. The reason was the tax collector revealed humility and recognition of his sin and need for grace while the Pharisee proudly relied on his own righteousness, which led to his contempt of others. The author of this gospel is not done with this theme.
