One would expect the third chapter of Jonah to be the end of the book. Jonah has turned back to God and has preached to the city of Ninevah. The city of Ninevah has repented from their evil ways and the Lord has relented from the disaster due to them. This is a great success for the Lord… However, the first verse of chapter 4 states, “But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.” This should be time of celebration, reveling in the spiritual victory that the Lord has obtained.
