It is the darkest of times in the history of Israel. First Kings 16:30 records that Ahab is king over Israel. He did evil in the sight of the Lord, more evil than all who were before him. Baal worship is increased, a false, pagan god of the land and Ahab also established Asherah worship (1 Kings 16:32-33). This is important background for understanding the events of 1 Kings 17.
