We are in a section of John’s gospel where Jesus is proving that he is God. Jesus healed a disabled man on the Sabbath. When questioned as to why he would break the Sabbath law, Jesus responded that the Father works on the Sabbath and therefore he must also work on the Sabbath because he is God. The rest of the fifth chapter is Jesus’ testimony that he is God.
